Abstract

“Ordoliberalism”, a school of thought substantially influenced by Walter Eucken, aims at constitutionalizing the economy. The state is meant to shape the institutional framework, the rules of the market, but should abstain from further interventions into economic actors’ decisions about their moves within the competitive market game. The term “Social Market Economy”, coined by Alfred Müller-Armack, is meant to provide guiding principles for framing the economy and more generally modern society. It recommends an active anti-trust policy, a market-compliant social policy and a consistent free-trade orientation. In this sense, the “Social Market Economy” aims at implementing “ordoliberal” principles.
