Abstract

HELCOM has formulated a target for the Baltic Sea to achieve "good ecological status" by 2030. Eutrophication is one of the main problems in the Baltic Sea. In this R&D project, spatio-temporally high-resolution simulations of the 3D ecosystem model ERGOM-MOM were used to review existing nutrient reduction targets in the western Baltic Sea. Scenario simulations were used to estimate the effects of single or multiple mitigation measures to improve water quality. We assumed that the nutrient reduction targets of the HELCOM BSAP, the German WFD implementation and the EU NEC Directive (limitation of atmospheric nitrogen deposition) will be met in order to analyze their impact on water quality in the western Baltic Sea. Our results show that there is no improvement for all eutrophication indicators and that only in one assessment unit (Kiel Bay) the good status is achieved after 30 simulated years, while the other basins clearly miss the targets. Furthermore, the simulation results were used to analyze the influence of the Odra river plume on the eutrophication assessment in the Bornholm Basin, as well as to evaluate the areal extent and temporal duration and variability of seasonally occurring oxygen deficiency areas in order to create a better assessment basis for this indicator. The results were utilized for the development of the HELCOM pre-core indicator "Shallow-water oxygen". The indicator is being evaluated for the purposes of the State of the Baltic Sea report (HOLAS III) and is expected to be developed into a core indicator in the future. This report also discusses an approach for integrating model simulations and measured data for a monitoring system for near-bottom oxygen.
