Abstract

The German Environmental Agency has conducted a monitoring of the market for sustainable consumption since 2013, which has been compiling turnover and market shares of green products, in particular of products with governmental ecolabels. The social dimension of sustainable development was hardly a theme in the past. The report thus examines the social aspects of con-sumption as a part of market monitoring in more depth. It shows possible approaches for sup-porting social aspects of consumption, analyzes social aspects in the most important sustainability labels, and clarifies the extent to which future monitoring of sustainable consumption should also consider social labels. The analysis shows that the social dimension is already implicitly included with the aspect of fairness within and between generations: the careful treatment of natural resources and the re-duction of environmental damages has positive effects for the present and future generations. However, strengthening the social dimension as well as including true social labels, in particular the Fair Trade Label, are recommended for the future monitoring of the market for sustainable consumption.
