Abstract

Civil society organizations often serve as critics of business firms. This easily creates the impression that the relation between both actor groups is to be characterized as a fundamental conflict. In contrast to that view, this article holds that both civil society organizations and business firms are important actors for sustainable development. Building on the ordonomic research program, we claim that civil society organizations and business firms possess two important common features: First, both actor groups are potential promoters of societal learning processes. Second, both actors can only reach their full potential and use it in favor of society if they act within an institutional framework that creates effective disincentives for misconduct.
